We live in suburban Pennsylvania. Our county is traditionally white. In the twelve years that we’ve lived here, the demographics of our neighborhood have shifted to mostly immigrant Indian families. Indian neighbors use WhatsApp groups to share community news, quickly folding in new families as they move in. We have never seen non-Indian neighbors in these groups. Growing up, cricket was a sport I vaguely knew of as British and Indian, something kind of like baseball. The first time I ever saw it played was when I watched the Hindi movie “Lagaan” in 2001. Our boys have built a sprawling town in our basement, aptly named “LEGO City”. When LEGO released their tuk tuk kit, I immediately ordered one for each of us, and we built them together as family. We knew they were modeled after Thai vehicles, not Indian rickshaws, but it didn’t matter—this was still the closest our kids had ever gotten to being able to include their Asian culture in LEGO City. Rotlis are an essential part of our food traditions, but making them is not easy to learn. It takes time and practice to figure out the right ratio of oil and water for a particular type of atta (flour), and the correct way to apply pressure to the velan (rolling pin) to get the rotlis to come out round. I didn’t make time to learn this until I was an adult, living on my own. I found myself wishing I had made more time to learn alongside my mother, so it wouldn’t feel so difficult.
