The Smith Family for The Marshall Project
Grace and Michael Smith of Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, found themselves in a nightmare after the birth of their son Julian in 2021, when a hospital drug screen — unable to distinguish between Grace's prescribed ADHD medication and methamphetamine — triggered a child welfare investigation and left the couple escorted out of the hospital without their newborn. Their story is one of many examined in this investigation by Shoshana Walter for The Marshall Project into how unreliable urine drug screens used in labor and delivery units across the country are separating families, often without confirmation testing or legal protections for parents.
